IGCSE Biology Tutoring in the UAE — Cambridge 0610 and Edexcel 4BI1

The two specifications

Cambridge 0610 — multiple choice, theory, and a practical component.

Tier Papers
Core Paper 1 (multiple choice) + Paper 3 (theory) + Paper 5 or 6
Extended Paper 2 (multiple choice) + Paper 4 (theory) + Paper 5 or 6

Many centres enter students for Paper 6, the alternative to practical.

Edexcel 4BI1 — two papers, no tiers, graded 9–1, 180 marks in total:

  • Paper 1 — 2 hours, 110 marks, about 61%
  • Paper 2 — 1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks, about 39%, going into extra depth on sub-topics Paper 1 doesn't examine

No separate practical exam — practical skills are tested inside the written papers.

Where marks are actually lost

  1. Data and graph questions. Describing a trend, drawing a conclusion, quoting figures with units. These carry heavy marks and follow predictable rules that can be taught.
  2. Command words. "Describe" and "explain" are different instructions and are marked differently. Students who describe when asked to explain lose marks on answers they know.
  3. Calculations. Magnification, percentage change, means — small in number, easy marks for students who've practised, lost marks for students who assumed Biology meant no maths.

Does Edexcel 4BI1 have tiers?

No. All candidates sit the same two papers.

Does my child sit Paper 6?

If they're on Cambridge 0610, the school decides between Paper 5 (practical) and Paper 6 (alternative to practical). Edexcel 4BI1 has no separate practical paper.

Is there maths in IGCSE Biology?
